Konzept des Kurses Praxisprojekt Entwicklungszusammenarbeit

Der Kurs „Praxisprojekt in Entwicklungszusammenarbeit“ wurde im Frühjahrssemester 2016 mit 24 Studierenden des Studiengangs  „Master International Affairs and Governance“ (8. Semester) angeboten. Der Kurs wurde in Form mehrerer Blockseminare durchgeführt. Nach einer Einführung in die Ansätze zur Entwicklungszusammenarbeit von seco und DEZA haben die Studierenden im Rahmen von Gruppenarbeiten an konkreten Projekten gearbeitet und diese im Rahmen eines zweitägigen Besuches in Bern mit Mitarbeitern von seco und DEZA diskutieren können. 

 

Themen DEZA und SECO 2016

1. Fair Trade, Producer Empowerment and Contract Production

In view of the upcoming review on Fairtrade Standards by Max Havelaar Switzerland, this paper aims to (1) conceptualize the notion of empowerment; (2) describe different Fairtrade models, analyse them using the outlined concept of empowerment, and compare the models with each other; and (3) propose solutions to the challenge of promoting Small Producer Organisations (SPO) in a Fairtrade (FT) Contract Production (CP) context. The analysis is based on in-depth literature research as well as three interviews with experts from Max Havelaar Switzerland, bioRe Foundation, and Fairtrade International.

2. Blended Finance

Blended finance is the strategic use of development finance and/or philanthropic funds to mobilize private capital flows to emerging and frontier markets, resulting in positive results for both investors and communities. The goal of this analysis is to give an extensive overview on the topic and to identify how methods of blended finance can close the investment gap.

3. Product Development Partnerships: Are PDPs efficient and effective in addressing the global health burden?

Product development partnerships (PDPs) have become an important tool in addressing the problem of market failure within the area of drug development for poverty-related neglected diseases (PRNDs). There has been a general tendency in recent times for seeking more purely private solutions regarding R&D for neglected diseases’ drugs. This raises the question whether PDPs are still effective and efficient in addressing the global health burden.

4. Klimapolitik nach der Pariser Klimakonferenz: Szenarien zur Ausgestaltung des internationalen Emissionshandels

Die Pariser Klimakonferenz hat deutlich gemacht, dass die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels nur durch einen tiefgreifenden Wandel der Klimapolitik auf den verschiedenen beteiligten Ebenen und eine veränderte gesellschaftliche Werthaltung in einem hinnehmbaren Ausmass gehalten werden können. Auch wenn dieses Bewusstsein mittlerweile breit verankert scheint, sind die Lösungsansätze zur Reduktion des globalen Ausstosses von Treibhausgasen weiterhin umstritten. Deshalb erläutert die folgende Arbeit den Zustand der Klimapolitik nach dem Pariser Klimakonferenz.
 

5. Social and Economic Integration of Refugees in the Region of their Origin

This paper aims to answer the following question: How can the great amount of refugees residing in the region of their origin be socially and economically better integrated without causing resentment and fear within the local population? Regarding this objective, the present paper focuses on Jordan and the Syrian refugees residing there. Furthermore, the question of integration is approached through the education sector. Within the scope of this paper, a project idea is developed, which contributes to the integration of Syrian refugees through the education sector.

6. Vocational Skills Development: Reaching the Poorest or Targeting VSD for Innovation. Is There a Trade-off Between These Two Goals?

This paper develops a quality and inclusive system for Vocational Skills Development (VSD). Therefore, it analyses current policies of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and differentiates between aid for the poor and aid for innovation. Additionally, the Swiss tradition of vocational education will be pointed out, to highlight the importance and value of VSD in Switzerland. Amongst other things, the paper urges to spread the idea of the successful education system of Switzerland.
